Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for geological field assistance
   • Access, interpret and apply geological field assistance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Arrange communications method and protocols with field team members
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select and obtain relevant geological instruments and field equipment for work activities
   • Perform geological instrument and field equipment checks to ensure instruments and equipment are ready for operation
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Collect and classify common rocks, ores and minerals
   • Take rock, ore and mineral samples according to site procedures and geologists requirements
   • Communicate field activities and results to relevant personnel
   • Examine specimens or outcrops to identify the properties and classify specimens into geological types
   • Compile records of all sampling results
3. Use geological maps and sections
   • Interpret correct symbols to read geological maps and sections
   • Interpret and record geological problems using block diagrams
   • Interpret and record geographical features from landforms and maps
   • Identify, in weathered outcrop, simple features as signs of the fresh rock type
   • Carry out basic geological surveying techniques

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of providing geological field assistance including:

driving all-terrain vehicles

complying with environmental requirements

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the provision of geological field assistance that meets all of the required outcomes including:

identifying and applying communication methods and protocols

communicating and coordinating activities with others

demonstrates completion of providing geological field assistance that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing instrument and equipment checks prior to use

collecting and classifying rocks, minerals and ore

conducting basic geological surveying

maintaining recording and reporting systems

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of providing geological field assistance through:

methods of sampling and sample identification

geology of rock, ore and mineral deposits

classification of rock, ore and minerals

geometry of geological structures on maps and in the field

company and site policy and procedures regarding geological field work

types and functions of geological instruments and field equipment

safe and correct use of instruments and equipment in the field

sampling procedures and requirements
